How to Become a PMP-Certified Professional: Step-by-Step Guide
The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is one of the most recognized credentials for project managers worldwide. Whether you want to boost your career, increase your salary, or work on global projects, becoming PMP-certified is a powerful step.
This step-by-step guide explains everything you need to do to become a PMP-certified professional—from eligibility to exam preparation and certification.
Step 1: Understand the PMP Certification Requirements
Before you apply, make sure you meet PMI’s eligibility criteria. There are two pathways based on your education level:
Option A (Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent)
- Education: 4-year degree
- Experience: 36 months of project management experience
- Training: 35 hours of project management education or CAPM certification
Option B (High School Diploma or Associate Degree)
- Education: Secondary degree
- Experience: 60 months of project management experience
- Training: 35 hours of project management education
🚨 You don’t need to be a project manager by job title — your role just needs to include managing tasks, teams, or deliverables.
Step 2: Complete 35 Hours of Project Management Training
PMI requires 35 contact hours of training before submitting your PMP application. You can complete it through:
- Online courses (self-paced or instructor-led)
- University programs
- PMI Authorized Training Partners
- CAPM Certification (if already completed)
Make sure the training covers topics from the PMBOK Guide and PMP exam content outline.
Step 3: Create a PMI Account and Start Your Application
Visit the PMI website (pmi.org) and create a free account.
You’ll need to enter:
- Your project management experience (roles, duration, responsibilities)
- Your education details
- Proof of 35-hour training
🕒 You have up to 90 days to complete the application once you start.
Step 4: Submit the Application and Wait for Approval
After submitting your application:
- PMI reviews it in about 5–10 working days
- In some cases, you may be selected for an audit (random and normal)
📌 If audited, you will need to send:
- Experience verification
- Education certificates
- Training proof
Once approved, PMI will send you an email with exam payment instructions.
Step 5: Pay the Exam Fee
Here’s the current PMP exam cost:
| PMI Membership | Exam Fee |
|---|---|
| Members | $405 USD |
| Non-Members | $555 USD |
💡 It’s beneficial to become a PMI member before paying — you’ll save money and gain access to study resources.
Step 6: Schedule Your PMP Exam
Once payment is done, you’ll receive your Eligibility ID, which is valid for 1 year.
You can take the exam:
- Online (Proctored) from home
- At a Pearson VUE Test Center
You get 3 attempts within the eligibility period.
Step 7: Prepare for the PMP Exam
The PMP exam focuses on three domains:
- People – 42%
- Process – 50%
- Business Environment – 8%
